Workshop on Energy Poverty and Renewable Energy Solutions

The FAIR Workshop, hosted by the University of Fort Hare, will bring together leading experts to tackle energy poverty and drive advancements in renewable energy. This three-day event will feature representatives from South African universities, including the University of Johannesburg, University of Venda, and University of KwaZulu-Natal, along with international partners such as the University of Corsica Pascal Paoli and the University of West Attica.

Central to the workshop is the preparation for the MSc in Energy Poverty Alleviation Technologies, set to launch at the University of Johannesburg in January 2026. This program will equip future leaders with the skills needed to combat energy poverty, which affects 47% of South African households. In areas like Soweto, where families spend up to 66% of their income on electricity, the MSc aims to drive affordable, sustainable solutions.

Led by Prof. Nnamdi Nwulu of CCP-FEWS, discussions will center on aligning the MSc program with South Africa’s urgent energy needs. By addressing energy poverty and advancing sustainable solutions, this workshop aims to create a lasting impact on communities and the nation’s future.

A highlight of the workshop will be site visits to the University of Fort Hare’s Solar Park and the Upper Blinkwater Mini-Grid project, showcasing innovative renewable energy initiatives that transform underserved communities. These projects highlight how sustainable energy can empower economic and social development.
