South Africa’s 30-Year Journey Toward Sustainable Development

The Centre for Cyber-Physical Food, Energy, and Water Systems (CCP-FEWS) at the University of Johannesburg is set to host a symposium celebrating South Africa’s 30-year journey toward sustainable development. The event will take place at the University of Johannesburg and bring together stakeholders from academia, government, and industry to explore achievements, challenges, and future opportunities.

The symposium will open with Prof. Pitshou Bokoro, Head of the School of Electrical Engineering, reflecting on South Africa’s milestones in democracy, renewable energy, and higher education.

Keynote addresses will include insights from Mr. Bernard Magoro, Head of the Independent Power Producers Office, who will discuss South Africa’s progress in energy accessibility and renewable energy adoption, with a focus on the need for localized solutions in energy transition efforts.

Prof. Nnamdi Nwulu, Director of CCP-FEWS, will share his expertise on innovation and technology’s role in addressing the Food-Energy-Water (FEW) Nexus. He will emphasize the importance of 4IR technologies like AI and IoT in driving sustainable solutions and fostering collaboration across sectors.

The event will also unveil the forthcoming MSc in Energy Poverty Alleviation Technology, scheduled to launch in 2026. Presenters Dr. David Love and Mr. Motlokwe Lekgau will discuss how the program aims to equip students with the tools to combat energy poverty and contribute to sustainable development.
